Emily Uhlrich

Born in Perth, Emily began her musical training as a violinist, and her qualifications include a Bachelor of Music Teaching (Violin) from the University of WA, and a BA Music Performance (Voice) from the Victorian College of the Arts. Emily has performed extensively as an orchestral musician, and has toured Europe with The West Australian Youth Orchestra, performed with the Kirov Ballet (Russia), The Perth International Arts Festival, and was also involved in the VCA performance of Mahler’s 2nd Symphony at the Melbourne Town Hall in 2003.

Emily has been trained under the tutelage of renowned soprano Molly McGurk and currently learns with Gary May, with whom she has developed a passion for Opera, Oratorio, concert and recital programmes.

Emily has also participated in various master classes with Suzanne Johnston, Richard Bonynge, Sir Derek McIntyre and Richard Gill. Awards include the Murray Ormond Vagg Vocal Scholarship (2004), the Athenaeum Club Vocal Award (2004), place winner for the Armstead Singing Award (MSV) (2005), Finalist in the Singer of the Year Competition (Melbourne Male Welsh Choir) (2005), Third place winner in the Inaugural RMP Aria (2007) and a Semi finalist in the Herald Sun Aria (2004, 2005, 2007). Emily has been a Finalist in the Herald Sun Aria and will perform in the Finals of Opera Foundation’s Covent Garden Scholarship and German Award in 2008.

Solo appearances in 2004 included Haydn’s The Creation, The Victorian College of the Arts Bach at St John’s Southgate services, Haydn’s Nelson Mass with the Melbourne Chorale, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, and Mozart Vesperea Solomnes. 2005 saw Emily perform as a soloist in Bach’s St Mathew Passion, Patience (Patience) for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Faure Requiem with Gloriana, Handel’s Messiah and Haydn’s Missa Brevis St Joannis de Deo with the Australian Boys choir, Mozart’s Missa Solemnis, Vivaldi Gloria and Mozart’s Requiem.

In 2006 Emily made her Opera Australia debut in the chorus for their autumn season of The Gondoliers and Turandot in November. Emily is also a founding member of the Victorian Opera chorus, and has performed in the Gala, Cosi fan tutte and Stravinky’s Les Noces, and Puccini The sacred and profane. Other appearances included Lyric Opera of Melbourne’s Vivaldi Project Il Giustino and Salieri’s Prima la musica.

Future engagements in 2008 include Bach’s Easter Oratorio with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic, Le Nozze di Figaro with Melbourne Opera, l’incoronazione di Poppea with Victorian Opera, and is currently performing the role of Clorinda in Oz Opera’s 2008 School’s company production of La Cenerentola for Opera Australia.
