ROGER HOWELL -  Baritone

Welsh-born Australian baritone Roger Howell graduated from the NSW Sydney Conservatorium of Music School of Opera and Music Theatre whilst teaching for the NSW Education Department.

Roger made his professional debut with the State Opera of S.A. as Figaro in Mozart's, "Le Nozze di Figaro".

Roger has performed with all the State Companies including Opera Australia in a wide variety of roles - title roles in Macbeth and Rigoletto, Mozart's Figaro in Il Barbiere di Seviglia, Amanasro in Aida, Valentin in Faust, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Sancho in Don Quichotte, Papageno in Die Zauberflote, Belcore in L'Elisir d'Amore, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Escamillo in Carmen, Paulo in Simone Boccenegra, Marcello and Schaunard in La Boheme, Sweeney Todd, Germont Pere in La Traviata, Guglielmo and Don Alfonso in Cosi fan Tutte, Gianni Scicchi, Pizzaro in Fidelio, Michele in Il Tabarro, Zurga in Les Pecheurs de Perles, title role in William Tell, Renato in Ballo in Maschera, Manfredo in L'Amore de tre Re, Zarastro in Orlando, Zuniga in Carmen and as Benoit and Alcindoro in La Boheme for Melbourne Opera, Cecco Del Vecchio in Melbourne Opera’s concert version of Rienzi, and US Consul Sharpless in Madame Butterfly.  In all, Roger’s opera roles number more than sixty.

Roger has appeared with all the State Orchestras in a variety of Concert and Oratorio work.

A founding member and current Director of Melbourne Opera, Roger concentrates on his other great passion - the teaching of young aspiring singers....even the not-too-young who share the passion!

Roger has lived and worked as a freelance opera singer in U.S.A., Great Britain, Italy and Germany.

Currently Roger runs private teaching practices in Melbourne and Geelong, based on the principles of the late Maestro Fernando Bandera who for thirty years was Vocal Advisor to La Scala in Milano, Italy.  Roger adjudicated the Senior Section of the National Eisteddfod in Canberra, and has performed The Brahms Requiem.  Roger was nominated for a 2015 Green Room award for his role of The Hermit in Melbourne Opera’s production of Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz.
