Dr David Kram has enjoyed a conducting career commencing in Spoleto, Italy, in 1969 and encompassing Grand Théâtre Geneva; Stadttheater Basel, Nationaltheater Mannheim, The Australian Opera Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, State Opera of South Australia Adelaide and many guest engagements in Australia, Bulgaria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Malaysia and Switzerland.
His Wagner experience started in childhood, mentored by his father, who had served as repetiteur at Covent Garden during the 1930s. In Geneva (1969-70) he was assistant with Parsifal to Swiss conductor Armin Jordan, which led to a five-year engagement as Kapellmeister in Basel. He conducted Lohengrin in Mannheim with cast and orchestral members of the Bayreuth Festival and was assistant conductor of the Ring Cycle in Geneva in 1977-8, also with Bayreuth singers. During the 1980s he assisted Mark Elder in Sydney with Meistersinger, Rheingold and Tristan und Isolde and, back in Europe 1991-95, conducted Die Meistersinger in Wiesbaden and Siegfried in Nantes, Brittany.
His most recent Wagner enterprise is the adaptation for More Than Opera (www.morethanopera.com) of the complete Ring Cycle for film-length multimedia showing for families with children, entitled The Ring.Wagner.Animated, which won awards in Adelaide and was co-presented with Melbourne Recital Centre during Opera Australia’s Melbourne Ring Festival. An even shorter version of this, just fifty minutes, designed for school incursions, will be premiered at the Opera Centre, Melbourne, from December 2-5, 2016, also endorsed by Opera Australia.
David Kram is very pleased to be working again with Melbourne Opera – his fourth engagement with the company following The Merry Widow, Fidelio and Der Freischütz.
