Isobel Veale

Born Melbourne and joined Australian Opera 1970 and appointed principal mezzo Sydney Opera House opening season 1973 in which she performed Princess Maria in Prokofiev’s War and Peace, Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana and a role in Larry Sitsky’s Lenz. She also sang 3rd Lady in The Magic Flute with Sir Charles Mackerras in that season, and returned to the same role with Melbourne Opera.


Studied London and worked with ENO and San Diego Opera. Also engagements with the VSO, SOSA, Oz Opera and Canberra Opera. Roles include Rossweise - Die Walkure, Gertrude - Hamlet, Page - Salome, 1 st Handmaiden - Elektra, Genevieve - Pelleas & Melisande, Annio - La Clemenza di Tito, Marcellina - Marriage of Figaro, Fidalma - Secret Marriage, Emilia - Otello, Melide - L’Ormindo, Mistress Bentson - Lakme, Mayor’s Wife - Jenufa, Bertha - Barber of Seville, Mother Marie - Dialogue of the Carmilites, Little Buttercup and Katisha - G & S, and roles in operas by Richard Mills and Larry Sitsky. Performed South Yarra Lady in Oz Opera’s City Life 2001 and earlier this year performed Assunta in Menotti’s Saint of Bleecker Street with Lyric Opera of Melbourne.
