Soprano Prima Donna Assoluta. Margaret Haggart’s professional opera career began in the uk performing Queen of the Night in Magic Flute and Gilda in Rigoletto with Welsh National Opera. Her extraordinary repertoire now spans more than 90 opera roles and 25 major choral/orchestral works. She was Principal Soprano with English National Opera for 5 years and then freelanced, appearing regularly with English National, Welsh National and Scottish Operas, Opera North, English Music Theatre, Chelsea Opera, the Camden, Woldingham and Chester Festivals, Prom concerts at Royal Albert Hall, bbc TV and radio, Nancy Opera, the Orange Festival in France, and Santiago Opera in Chile.
Home in Melbourne since 1984, Margaret has sung in Italy, Singapore, New Zealand, and the usa, including a personal invitation from Gian-Carlo Menotti to the Spoleto Festivals in Charleston, Spoleto, and Melbourne. She appeared frequently with Victoria State Opera and sings regularly with Opera Australia, all State companies, all major Festivals (Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney), the major Australian symphony orchestras, and with abc tv and radio. Conductors Margaret has worked with include Sirs Charles Mackerras, Charles Groves, Roger Norrington, John Eliot Gardiner, Alexander Gibson, Richard Armstrong, and Reginald Goodall, as well as Richard Boynyge, Richard Divall, Mark Elder, Carlo Rizzi, Reinhardt Peters, Leo Druyhuis, Gyorgy Fischer, and Jerome Kaltenbach.
Operatic roles: Mozart’s Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan Tutte), Konstanze (Seraglio),Elektra (Idomeneo), Vitellia (Clemenza di Tito), Marcellina (Figaro) and Donn’ Anna (Don Giovanni); Verdi’sLeonora (Trovatore), Violetta (Traviata), Abigaille (Nabucco), Lady Macbeth, and the title roles of The Merry Widow, Katja Kabanova, Lucrezia Borgia, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot. She won Green Room Awards for her portrayals of Mrs. Grose (Turn of the Screw), Foreign Woman (The Consul) and The Witch (Hansel and Gretel). She took part in world premieres of Fly (Barry Conyngham), The Aspern Papers (Michael Hurd), The Selfish Giant (Michael Easton), and Love Burns (Graeme Koehne).
Concert repertoire: oratoria by Handel, Haydn, and MendeIssohn; the Requiems of Brahms, Fauré, Dvorak, Mozart, and Verdi; and symphonies by Beethoven, Gorecki, and Shostakovich. Margaret is a founding director of Melbourne Opera.
