Rosamund Illing is one of Australia’s most renowned sopranos. Her career spans the breadth of the repertoire for lyric soprano in opera, symphony and song. She has performed in England, France, Germany, Japan, the United States, Canada and Australia and her recordings have been showered with many accolades.
After graduating with honours from the University of Adelaide, Ms Illing continued her studies in England and Italy. She soon embarked on an impressive series of opera engagements in Great Britain with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (as Musetta in La bohème with Placido Domingo as Rodolfo), English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Glyndebourne Touring Opera and at the Wexford Festival. In Australia, Ms Illing has performed with each of the state opera companies and Opera Australia.
Ms Illing’s operatic repertoire demonstrates her knowledge and experience performing some of the genres great soprano roles, including: Alcina, Abigaille, Donna Anna, Elettra, Vitellia, Gilda, Norina, Marguerite, Amelia, Cio Cio San, Liù, Mimì, Nedda and many more.
On the concert platform, Ms Illing has performed with Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Charles Mackerass, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir George Solti, Gustav Kuhn and Richard Bonynge, in association with many of the great orchestras. She has appeared in recital at the Aldeburgh Festival, the Melbourne and Perth International Arts Festivals and at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan.
Recent highlights include: Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 for the Adelaide Festival; recitals for Musica Viva and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville. She performed the Four Last Songs with Stonnington Symphony; Rachmaninov songs with pianist, Eidit Golder; featured in the opening concerts of the newly refurbished Hamer Hall; appeared as The Minister’s Wife in Pecan Summer in several cities; presented Massenet Salon songs in Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane and appeared with Orchestra Victoria performing Chaussons’ Poeme de L'Amour et de la Mer.
Rosamund has held Masterclasses in Dunedin and Auckland and at Victorian Opera and the State Opera of South Australia and was recently a principal adjudicator for the Sydney Eisteddfod McDonald’s Aria.
For Melbourne Opera Rosamund has appeared in concert as Adriano in Wagner's Rienzi for Melbourne Opera as part of the Melbourne Ring Festival and featured in their Opera Gala.
Rosmund's latest role for Melbourne Opera was Queen Elizabeth I in Donizetti's Mary Stuart (Maria Stuarda).
