Stephen Brodie

Stephen began singing in school choirs at the age of five. After the usual school productions, he then joined the National New Zealand Youth Choir and participated in their World Tour in 1982. This trip was to whet Stephen’s appetite for opera in two ways. Firstly the choir sang with Kiri Te Kanawa in London and secondly he saw one of his first opera performances, namely ENO’s Tosca.

Stephen auditioned for Mercury Opera in Auckland on his return and spent three years as a member of the company. Highlights of this time were performing as Sparafucile in Rigoletto and singing in the New Zealand premiere of Sweeney Todd.

Stephen then moved to Brisbane, Australia to further his studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, graduating after four years with a Graduate Diploma of Opera. Notable roles included Frank Maurrant in Street Scene and Tevye in A Fiddler on the Roof. During this time, Stephen also toured with (then) Lyric Opera of Queensland in the role of Asterburg in the Student Prince.

The next six years saw Stephen performing in the Cameron Mackintosh production of the Phantom of the Opera as it toured Australia and New Zealand. Over this period, he performed a variety of roles.

At the end of the tour, Stephen settled in Melbourne. He turned to other performance work in the form of film, TV and theatre. He completed a one year Foundation course at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001.

Stephen returned to opera in 2005 playing the part of Frosche in Melbourne Opera’s Die Fledermaus. He has continued to perform in various productions with Melbourne Opera up to this year.
