Our Director Hugh Halliday describes Die Fledermaus as pure champagne dahlin… pure delight, and what better opera to reflect the optimism which so many have held for Melbourne Opera since our inaugural performance of La Traviata on June 5, 2003?<\/p>\n

Principal artists, chorus, orchestra, creative & technical, volunteers, supporters, and audience members alike have been part of the spirit that has gone into rebuilding a professional opera company for Victoria; and it is my pleasure to welcome you to this celebration of a wonderful three years for our fledgling company. The most exciting part of building a company is being able to give opportunities to the many talented artists and musicians who live in Victoria, and I am honoured to have been involved with the company since its inception.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Her Majesty\u2019s
2005 has been one of the most successful years in recent times at Her Majesty\u2019s Theatre, and I can think of no better way to celebrate than with an opera that pivots around a lavish party! This is our sixth opera performance in two years and the third production we have staged with Melbourne Opera.<\/p>\n

At the risk of being accused of a certain bias, I believe The Maj is the best place in Melbourne to hear and see opera. Since the days of Dame Nellie Melba and then Dame Joan Sutherland this theatre has stood alone providing wonderful acoustics and clear sightlines that enhance the experience for any audience member. Performers also love playing at The Maj.<\/p>\n

Luciano Pavarotti said to the world media that it was on our stage back in 1965 where he \u2019found his voice\u2019. He made a point, on his recent farewell visit to Melbourne, of seeking out Her Majesty\u2019s Theatre for a final thank you and goodbye. I am so pleased to welcome Melbourne Opera back and to welcome you to The Maj to share in this wonderful production.<\/p>\n
