The acclaimed Melbourne soprano Helena Dix returns from performances and broadcasts at New York’s Metropolitan Opera (Norma) and in London (Clemenza di Tito) to star in Maria Stuarda for Melbourne Opera.

Long regarded as one of the most demanding bel canto roles, Maria Stuarda traces the downfall of Mary Stuart at the hands of Elizabeth 1. A string of virtuoso arias and duets, a famous confrontation scene with Elizabeth and the moving execution scene are just some of the highlights of this great work.

‘How sensible and economical of the company to revive a successful, crowd-pleasing production.’ – Peter Rose. Austraian Book Review. Full Review.

‘Top to bottom, note to note and awash with spine-tingling tension, Saturday’s opening night of Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda thrilled completely.’ – Paul Selar. Arts Review. Full Review

‘… a beautifully blended, expertly realised musical performance that is as satisfying as it is entertaining …’ – Simon Parris. Full review.

Direct from her triumphant Ring Cycle, Suzanne Chaundy directs this production.

The Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by bel canto specialist Raymond Lawrence.
